The Thane unit of the Railway Crime Branch seized 32.923 kilograms of ganja worth Rs 8,35,700 from two women who were illegally selling the contraband in Mumbai from reserved coaches of long-distance mail and express trains. Both were subsequently arrested.
Acting on the orders and instructions of the Commissioner of Police, Railways, Rakesh Kalasagar, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Zone, Railways, Pragya Jedge, the teams had been directed to patrol effectively in order to prevent illegal activities and crimes within the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Railways Police Commissionerate.
Duo caught moving suspiciously in the compartment
As part of heightened vigilance during Ganeshotsav, on 27 August the team was conducting patrols in the reserved coaches between Kalyan and Thane on Train No. 18030, the Shalimar–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express. When the train arrived at Thane Railway Station, the police team noticed two women in Coach No. S/6 behaving suspiciously while carrying passenger bags.
On checking the luggage on the platform itself, the women admitted that their bags contained marijuana. For security reasons and further action, the police team, with the assistance of female officers, escorted the suspects along with their bags to the Thane unit office, where a detailed search was conducted.
The accused have been booked under Sections 8(C), 20(B)(2)(C), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, along with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
